GULABO SITABO : MOVIE REVIEW
By Siddhant Parija
Gulabo sitabo directed by Soojit Sircar stars a deadly combination of legendary Amitabh Bacchan and informal Ayushman Khurrana in versatile roles. The movie title is based on popular puppet show tracing its origin in 17th century which showcases Gulabo and Sitabo in different contexts, sometimes warring sister in law or spouses. This unique relationship gives a message of social evils in society from which the movie took the inspiration.
The movie is all about constantly conflicting relationship of the original source material and focuses on a grumpy landlord Mirza played by Amitabh Bacchan who holds his dilapidated mansion in Lucknow, but he has many problems in form of tenants, one speaking out like a sore thumb is Bankey played by Ayushman Khurrana stubborn and squatting in the mansion. The oscillating relationship between develops into constant squabbles and how they make deliberate mistake for which they are smashed with ultimate penalty.
Underwhelming Aspects —>
From Ayushman’s movies we all know how brilliantly he plays character and speech of UP boy, but the lisp in his speech turned out slight errors in directory as in some sequences it stands out and these are negligible. Movie’s slow pace will also let you suffer a little to understand the plot and role of characters fitting into the story.
GULABO SITABO : Good Aspects—–>
The chemistry and realistic interactions within characters signs out with an example of perfect acting example. Lucknow and it’s charm is the aspect that undeniably stands out in the film as if a character itself is the beautiful city of Lucknow. The city of Nawabs Lucknow is beautifully portrayed by the cinematographer as the city has it’s many ways preserved in history, especially the monuments and heritage sites that held the age old charm of the city. Basically the movie is slowburn that will have an explosive impact.
Gulabo Sitabo consisting of capable supporting cast of talented actors in this film.
Shristi Sristava as smart, capable and motivated Guddo presents a sense of comfort infront of camera which is refreshing. Brijesh Kala the veteran who is lawyer of Mirza excellently showcases the accent of Lucknowi lawyer. The supporting character that steals the show is Vijay Raj as Gyanesh Shukla the archeological official who is nossy about the haveli. Now moving on towards the two leads, yes you will see another Ayushman’s masterpiece perfectioning himself for offbeat roles and Amitabh Bacchan the legend who is doing transformative roles at 77 , grabs the attention through out the movie with his peculiar character and activities with such an ease.
GULABO SITABO : Genre –>
It’s important to understand that this film is from the genre of satire. Satire is a genre which uses humour and irony to expose people’s voices. Gulabo Sitabo through it’s comedy and interactions among several characters provides a spitting image of the ugly reality of human nature.
