In Japan, among the popular yōkai(s) during the Edo period(17th to 19th century), the Kuchisake onna or The Slit Mouthed Woman is one. She is an urban legend known for her deformed mouth and carrying a sharp object to kill her victims after scarying them. Her appearance was used in many manga-animes and live action movies under the Horror genre and till now her story terrifies everyone.
We do not acknowledge the viability and authenticity of this myth. Its our pure intention to present to our readers the translated version of the legends of different cultures for entertainment and knowledge.
Slit mouthed woman
The story is about a woman who wore a long coat and covered half her face with a mask. She used to wander as a spirit and ask people, “ Am I beautiful?”
If you say, “No!”, she would bring out her knife and kill you.
If you would say, “ Yes!”, She would drop off her mask and show her ear-to-ear slit mouth. Then she would ask, “ Am I still beautiful?”
You would obviously get surprised and say, “No, no!” and doing so the slit mouthed woman would eventually smile and kill you.
But if you would still say, “Yes!”, she will take her scissors out and slit your face as hers.
So as you see, you will never get past her unharmed. Beware of the Kuchisake onna!
